FINANCIAL AID TIPS FOR PARENTS
|
This Month’s Features · In December 2009, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced the National Financial Capability Challenge. An earlier version of the Challenge was organized by Treasury under the previous administration, and this expanded effort builds on that success. The goal is to get one million high school students to accept the Challenge, which includes a volunteer online exam, by April 9, 2010. Educators, youth group leaders, librarians, and after-school program staff can provide help by working with high school students age 13-19, to help them sign up for the Challenge at http://www.challenge.treas.gov/ by March 14.
· Students should visit www.fafsa.gov to complete the online FAFSA. Please remind students that if a Web site requests credit card information or some other form of payment to complete the FAFSA, then that site is not the official government (FREE) Web site.
· Remind students to pay close attention to deadlines as they apply for financial aid. State-imposed deadlines for state-funded aid appear on FAFSA on the Web at www.fafsa.gov. Because schools may have their own deadlines for federal campus-based and school financial aid, students should directly contact financial aid administrators at their prospective schools to determine if schools have their own application forms for aid and to confirm school deadlines.
· Encourage students to review their Student Aid Report (SAR) and to correct any errors, if necessary, in the information supplied on the FAFSA. Students can make changes to data on the SAR by visiting FAFSA on the Web at www.fafsa.gov and clicking on ‘View and Print Your Student Aid Report.’
· As students begin to apply for financial aid, they should be careful to keep their personal information safe. Encourage students to read Save Your Money, Save Your Identity at www.studentaid.ed.gov/pubs to learn ways to reduce the risk of identity theft.
